The Higher Diploma in Illustration aims to equip students with creative and effective illustration skills including critical and analytical thinking, graphic manipulation, visual expression and concept visualisation. Areas of studies include visual language and expression, narrative skills, concept visualisation, media art, illustration appreciation, lettering and typography, and visualisation skills such as drawing, painting and computer graphics. Areas of contextual studies will include cultural studies, professional practice and entrepreneurship. The programme also provides professional level training in the observation, exploration of communication methodology and visual interpretation.

The programme provides a broad educational experience with creativity, project management, interpersonal communication and team-building skills which match industry demands for flexible, articulate graduates who are able to compete in a dynamic, fast-paced and ever-changing regional creative environment.

In collaboration with School for Higher and Professional Education (SHAPE) and UK universities in Communication Design. By first completing a two-year Higher Diploma and then a final year degree programme, students can earn a Bachelor’s degree (Hons) in three years.

#1 Introduction
Studying illustration opens the door to diverse careers in the creative industries. You will respond to ideas, explore narratives and work across a range of media, including 2D, 3D and moving image. Self-directed projects could range from editorial to narrative, 3D model-making to film, animation to artists’ books, providing excellent preparation for the commercial world.

We encourage you to create and develop your own personal visual language.  Through the research project module, you will be able to build your creative, professional and research skills, critical questioning and persuasion skills, and expand your ideas about what illustration can be and do.

Fine Art is a dynamic subject that it can be showcased through collectives, galleries and public spaces. Contemporary art generates powerful new ideas and platforms for debate. Working as an artist is social, practical, and theoretical, and can involve you in an exciting range of cultural and educational activities everywhere.

The Centre for Communication Design at Hong Kong Design Institute is an applied research and consultancy hub dedicated to the advancement of knowledge in all areas of graphic communication including typography, information design, advertising, user experience design, illustration, brand communications as well as printing and publishing. It acts as a knowledge exchange platform between staff, students as well as external organisations, tightly integrating practice, research, teaching and outreach activities.
