Centre for Communication Design

The Centre for Communication Design is a knowledge hub associated with the Department of Communication Design at the Hong Kong Design Institute. The Centre bridges theory with real world practices and applications, combining curricula teaching with professional consultancy and applied research projects undertaken by faculty.

Research interests

The Centre is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge in all areas of communication design including graphic communication, typography, information design, user experience design, advertising design, illustration as well as visual culture. As a knowledge exchange platform between students, academic staff and external partners, the work of the Centre tightly integrates research, learning and outreach activities.

How visual conventions and aesthetic preferences evolve, how communication happens within social, cultural and economic contexts, how communities identify themselves through visual expressions across time and geography.

We are interested in exploring innovations in printing processes, imaging technology, content and workflow management, and hybrid publishing models, as well as publish titles on visual culture.

We conduct applied research and consultancy projects on how people interact with graphic communications: how they respond emotionally and search for information, whether they understand the message, and are able to use the information to take relevant actions.

HSBC bilingual typography standards

We conducted the study to discover whether the current English-language typographic specifications are adequate to be adapted to the Traditional Chinese language version across HSBC’s digital products in Hong Kong
